Hair swirling, the warm ocean currents cradle the mermaid sisters.
"Water - the ocean - is our most natural environment.  We are born naked from the miniature ocean of the mother's womb."

Posted for Illustration Friday - Topic "Lonely"
Painting "Angel" by Suzanne Hills VanBrunt (me)
copyright 2002

My drawings/paintings always seem to have an emotion to them. This is not something I plan and as with all my work it just slowly reveals it self. With this particular one I have always felt a sense of quiet loneliness. etsy.com/shop/TheMetaphysicalMoose

More About the Color Blue

Blue obviously is not a new color by any means and is all over the world and in many traditions. From blue Mosques in Malaysia, Iran and Egypt to the Catholic religion's association with the Virgin Mary, many times depicted or surrounded by a sky blue background. Blue is also used in the political world. The Democratic Party uses blue and states made up of mostly Democratic constituents are know as "blue states". Blue is used from advertising logos like Pepsi and The Gap to sports teams such as the Giants or Lowe's racing. We have blue mailboxes (in the US), a blue ribbon when we win something, a "blue room" at the White House, Blue Bloods, Picaso's "blue period", a blue plate special (which is the name of a restaurant in my town........Yum!) officers in blue and blue laws, blueprints, Elvis's "Blue Christmas" and everybody knows the Blue Man Group...........although how they can stand all that blue makeup goop all over themselves.........yuk! But they're  sooooo cool!

Speaking of cool..............Blue is from the cool color family and a large family it is......sky blue, aquamarine, blaby blue, cerulean, midnight and twilight blue, cornflower, lapis lazuli, blue demim, periwinkle, turquoise, indigo, teal blue and the list goes on. Blue is peaceful and produces in us a sence of calm. It's the color of the Throat Charkra which is connected to communication, artistic expression, clairaudience and the thyroid. Blue also symbolizes loyalty........ever heard of a friend being "true blue"? I don't know about you but it make you look at blue in a whole new way :)

What is it about blue?

What is it about the color blue? It was never one of my favorite colors. Oh don't get me wrong, I liked the color blue........just not enough to paint a whole room or to buy a shirt that color. But as trends go........and I always seem to be two steps ahead........I have seriously warmed up to the now popular cool color.
A few years back it started with my living room. I was at one of those big DIY stores.........ok it was Home Depot there I said it........anyways I was purusing the paint section when I came across Ralph Lauren's Sea Spray and "Ah ah ahhhhhhh" I was hooked! I don't know how many of you use actual color on your walls or if you use just a hint of color but I go through different stages when I'm painting with a color I'm not used to. Stage 1 first coat.........."What the hell did I just do?"  Then I take a deep breath, calm down, remember it's only paint just finish it. Stage 2 second coat.........."OMG I love it!"
From there my bathroom a light Aqua (which I made from the blue of the living room and  Boston Fern from my kitchen and Lancaster White from all the trim) then inside my kitchen cabinets (again Aqua) from there a beautiful weathered teal blue purse and funky dark blue nail polish (Target). Yes I have to say my love of blue has now become an obsession ............who knew?  So when I was asked to make a birthday cake for the daughter of a good friend all I could think of was how pretty it would be if I did it a robins egg blue with white swirls (see above pic) Then the holidays came and you guessed it blue snow flake cookies (thanks Martha for your butter cookie recipe).
Now ten pounds heavier.............well they were good cookies.........and I'm itching to redo my bedroom and and debating incorporating...........yup blue, which if you watch HGTV almost every show has a room blue and it started me thinking............."Do I really like this color or have I been programed to like this color?" Society has shown how sheepish we can be and even the most anti-follower will slowly join the herd. Well rather than make myself crazy and in protest re-paint my now beautiful rooms a different color just to stick it to the man, I have decided to embrace my new favorite color scheme and to just be happy............not blue.

What's in a Name?

I really have to say that artwork comes naturally to me....... must be in my blood because there are quite a few talented people in my family. Many times I don't even know what a painting/project is going to be  well into it...... then poof or voila! and I have this item of beauty...... but ask me to put a name on it...... forget it........ I draw a blank (no pun intended). Shakespeare wrote in Romeo and Juliet "What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet." How do we know that we are naming something the right name? Sometimes the name is obvious...... like an orange....... it's color is orange or did the name of the color come from the fruit? Which came first? the chicken or the egg?....... ok I'm getting off track, but when my children were born we came up with their names before they were born....... not after like some people do. What if they were better off being called Jack instead of Jake or Elvis instead of Evan?  I know I have called them by many other colorful names when they've pissed me off....... but I'll save that for another post. The real question is why can't I put a name to my art without this panic? What if it's wrong? and who says it's wrong? and why do I care?...... Anyway I posted some of the paintngs that I need help naming and PLEASE feel free to sugest names and comment. Stop back often cuz I have a lot of nameless paintings and will be posting them before I put them in my Etsy shop. Thanks in advance :) from this desperate artist
